Unlocking Renewable Energy from Water
Services: Design & Build
Project Value: £1,000,000
Innovate Heat designed and is currently delivering a marine source heat pump system for the refurbishment of a Grade I listed building in Liverpool, providing the building’s complete heating and cooling requirements. By harnessing renewable energy from the Mersey River, the system offers a highly efficient, low-carbon alternative to conventional heating and cooling, while avoiding the planning, visual and acoustic challenges associated with rooftop air source equipment—an important consideration for a heritage building.
The system extracts water from the saline dock before passing it through a specialist intake arrangement designed to protect marine life and prevent debris entering the system. Automatically flushing filters remove biological material before the water transfers its energy through titanium plate heat exchangers and is safely returned to the dock. One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the adaptation of proven industrial process technology for the water abstraction system, demonstrating Innovate Heat’s approach to applying established engineering solutions in new ways. By combining proven technologies with innovative thinking, we deliver systems that are efficient, reliable and resilient, while continually pushing the boundaries of low-carbon heating and cooling design.
